Disc Herniation

Disc herniation is a condition of the cervical spine (neck) or lumbar spine that occurs when the soft, jelly-like center of a spinal disc pushes through a fissure in the disc’s exterior. Sometimes called a slipped disc or ruptured disc, it may not cause any ill effects, but some people are deeply affected by disc herniation. A herniated disc can cause intense pain, numbness, tingling, sciatica, and muscle weakness.

Disc herniation has many causes. Often the result of age related disc degeneration, in which case it’s called degenerative disc disease, it can also be caused by improper lifting, trauma from a fall or blow to the back, excess weight, or even a physically demanding job. In some cases, the cause cannot be determined.
