A condition that causes deterioration of the protective fluid surrounding the joints and bones, osteoarthritis often results in joint pain, stiffness, and a reduced range of movement. Because osteoarthritis symptoms occur during both periods of movement and rest, they often interfere with normal activities like walking, dressing, and sleeping. Osteoarthritis of the knee can cause:
- Tenderness in the knee
- Knee pain during movement
- A sensation of ‘grating’ or ‘catching’ when moving the knee
- Pain severe enough to prevent proper exercise of the knee, which leads to weak muscles.
